Khalifa City, often called Khalifa City A, is the villa district on the mainland near Abu Dhabi International Airport, across the highway from Al Raha Beach. It is laid out on wide streets with villas and compounds on generous plots, and it has grown into one of the main family neighbourhoods for expats in Abu Dhabi. Etihad Plaza is the retail centre in the middle, Al Raha Gardens and Al Forsan sit next door, and the Abu Dhabi Golf Club is a short drive away. Schools, nurseries and the airport itself are the reasons most families give for living here.
The homes are large and busy. A Khalifa City villa usually has three to six bedrooms, a bathroom for almost every one of them, a big kitchen, a garden and often a private pool. Compounds share a pool and a gate. Some villas have been divided into separate apartments, each with its own entrance. Gardens and pools bring in sand, wet footprints and chlorine marks, the wide streets mean dust from passing traffic on the windows, and the number of bathrooms is where most of the time goes.
