Al Reef is a gated community on the mainland side of Abu Dhabi, next to Abu Dhabi International Airport and a short drive from Masdar City. It was built as a complete neighbourhood rather than a block of towers: Al Reef Villas in Arabian, Mediterranean, Contemporary and Desert styles, the mid rise apartment blocks of Al Reef Downtown in the centre, community pools, a small retail centre and gated villa clusters with their own entrances. Families choose it for the space, the quiet streets and the short drive to the airport and to Yas Island, and many stay for years.

The desert is the thing that shapes cleaning here. The community sits in sandy surroundings with open land on the airport side, so fine dust comes in on every breeze and settles on window sills, along skirting boards and across the tiled floors that most Al Reef villas have throughout. Private gardens and patios bring sand in on shoes, and the pool areas leave wet footprints and chlorine marks on the tiles by the door.
