Al Shamkha is a villa district to the south east of Abu Dhabi, out towards the airport and the desert, with Al Falah on one side and Madinat Al Riyad and Bani Yas on the other. It grew as a home for Emirati families and it still feels that way: wide plots, high boundary walls, majlis rooms for guests and gardens that wrap around the house. Alreeman by Aldar and Al Shamkha South have added new streets of villas, and Makani Al Shamkha gives the area its own mall with a supermarket, cafes and clinics a short drive from every street.
Cleaning a villa here is a different job from cleaning a flat in the city. The plots are sandy and the desert is close, so fine dust settles on window sills, shutters and the tops of wardrobes within days. A single home can have five or six bathrooms, a main kitchen and a second kitchen, a driver room and a majlis that needs to look right when guests arrive. Many villas in Alreeman and Al Shamkha South have only recently been handed over, and the first clean after handover means paint spots, cement dust and sticker glue on the glass. Older houses in the original streets need limescale and grease work instead, especially in bathrooms and the second kitchen.
